Frankenstein with a Sharpie

Gabby S. Tiongson a.k.a. “DIKO” wields a Sharpie with the surgical precision of a scalpel. Black lines, sure and strong, cut through paper giving life to creations pulled from Tiongson’s cerebrum. Like a hyper-energetic Frankenstein, the 26-year-old concocts “design ideas” that graft together body parts—human, animal, and imaginary. His background in medicine has given him the confidence to toy with nature and the gall to replace a pig’s ears with human hands.

Tiongson’s cartoonish style is a culmination of all his influences and obsessions, among which he counts the animated television shows from the 1980s and 1990s; fantasy genre computer games such as World of Warcraft; Todd McFarlane’s Spawn; and legendary creatures such as the chupacabra.

A wild talent used to producing at least one freehand work a day, Tiongson honed his drafting skills by participating in notebook “doodle battles,” creating vector graphics for T-shirts, and drawing structurally sound fingers based on Richard Snell’s Clinical Anatomy.

Tiongson’s introduction to the Manila art scene comes in the form of Neurana, short for “neuroanatomy,” a solo show composed of pen-on-paper illustrations and experimental acrylic paintings. In his inaugural exhibition, Tiongson takes the brain, the seat of consciousness and intellect, and transmogrifies it into a giraffe, a whale, a snail, and many other visual puns.

His hand is deliberate, his lines clean. Many of his drawings, which feature limbs in the most unusual places, are adorned with belly buttons, a reference perhaps to omphalokepsis, navel-gazing, and self-contemplation. To fill in white space, he uses indigenous patterns, the stylized Tinalak diagonals adding a subtle Filipino-ness to what is, at first glance, a very Western sensibility.

Tiongson, a self-taught artist, is still feeling his way to his own style. Nevertheless, after filling many a sketchpad with his imaginings, he has developed a cohesive body of work marked by a recognizable aesthetic. The smooth, expressive contours of reality-flouting subjects radiate a confidence built over years of drawing. Even without being formally trained, Tiongson is in possession of his own visual vocabulary.

The choice of the human brain for his inaugural exhibition is symbolic of the limitlessness of the human imagination. “Invention,” Mary Shelley writes in the introduction of Frankenstein, “does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos.” It is into this creative chaos, this plethora of limbs, that Tiongson invites us. Like Shelley’s protagonist, he is set to “pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.”

Urban Forest Jewelry, a new brand from Dave Quiles of Outta My Mind Creations, combines technology with imagination and nature to create delightful works of graphic art that one can exhibit while wearing. The power of electromagnetic waves and human creativity are harnessed (insert maniacal laugh here) to carve visually inspiring pieces from wood primarily, but also other materials. Each wood piece is carefully produced to preserve the natural, organic features of exotic hardwoods along with an original design. This is the first figure for our Rotobox Parallel Works series.
The concept of this series is that we do our version of a certain character but with a twist, like a parallel universe or a different outlook on the character, in this case, it's from the anime Akira, where Kaneda has a bike, and in our parallel works series, we did a robot instead :)
but we still based the concept on kaneda's bike.
The poster that we did is also based on the poster of Akira, where kaneda is walking straight to his bike.

Art Assault, the charity art show that unites music with visual arts and designer toys is going international—fittingly bringing along its unrivaled collection of customized guitars by international art stars. From the show’s conception, Outta My Mind Creations and Mai Hiro in partnership with Gibson Guitars had imagined a tour to share the creativity and spirit of Art Assault to people around the globe. Now, that reality is made possible as they have teamed up with Sweemie & Co./Summit to bring their unique show to the beautiful and exotic Asian island of Taiwan. In fact, Art Assault will be a featured exhibit at the 2011 Taipei Toy Festival on July 7-10th.

All of the 11 guitars from the first Art Assault show, which took place at Art Basel Miami 2010, will be exhibited for this pop-art loving audience of Taiwan to enjoy. With an emphasis on electric guitars and designer toys, the incredible artists went beyond conventional designs and created truly unique works of art. The artists are Michael Lau, Nakanari, Pete Fowler, Christian Jacobs, 123Klan, Matt Waldman, Camilla d’Errico, Ashley Wood, Long Vo, Lebo, and Jeff Bridges. To make each location of the tour fresh, we are adding a new artist to join the original amazing line-up. Hong Kong artist Kenny Wong (kennyswork) will customize an Epiphone Les Paul II guitar for the show. Also, the Kidrobot Dunny Superband by Jure Gavran, Dave “Outtamymind” Quiles, Tracy Tubera, kaNO, and Rotobox Vinyl Anatomica will be making its overseas debut as well. Kidrobot has happily agreed to continue their support with giveaways to make the show something to delight the masses. Kusopop kicks off 2011 with a great new start!

With the new website 2.0 just launched and a focus on life style branding, Kusopop creates a new campaign for their new products featured in a lookbook and video. The campaign was shot in Orlando, FL in a joint collaboration with Bluemotion, Mike Begonia Photography, Rotobox, and Mai Hiro. International Cosplay model Linda Le "Vampy Bit Me" made the trip from the West Coast to participate in the professional photo and video shoot. Production took place at the Reign boutique and Mochi Frozen Yogurt locations. The lookbook photos and video will add a new element to the Kusopop blog along with a featured section highlighting a special interview from our important guest model. This is the first time a campaign video for Kusopop has been produced and was an important focus to showcase the lifestyle of the Kusopop brand. The photo and video lookbook will present new products which are available on the Kusopop website. Check out the new site special promotion It's "buy 2, get 1 free" on all their T-shirts, as well as other cool accessories by Nakanari, Rotobox and Itokin Park.

ahh, 2011, time really flies sooo fast. 2010 was a blast for us, from the 1st ever celsius custom show on january until the gibson art assault on december, 2010 will be a year we will never forget, thanks to you, our readers, our clients, our families, our fans! :) its been more than 2 weeks since our last post, we took the time off for the holidays to spend with our families. now that 2011 is here, its time to make some customs again! :D next in line will be our heltershelter custom series, which will be exclusive to an online gallery in hongkong. we will be releasing some pics within the month so stay tuned! after that we will be making some commissions so it will be a pretty busy time for us until feb. happy new year to all!

Gibson Charity Show - Art Assault - Recap!

Art Basel Miami 2010 has come and gone, but not without the launch of Art Assault, a creative collaboration between Gibson and Kramer Guitars, Outta My Mind Creations and Mai Hiro which serves to bring together art with music in exciting new ways. With a spotlight on electric guitars and designer toys, the incredible artists involved went beyond conventional designs and created truly unique works of art that were displayed in the trendy Gibson Showroom located in the heart of Miami's Design District. The support of Kidrobot and Kuso Vinyl helped instill the show with the designer toy vibe that the creators had found vital to portray, while Tito's Handmade Vodka, Monster Energy and Bento Café instilled fans with spirits, energy, and sushi nutrition for stomachs along for the creative ride! The reception was quite a success with many visitors taking in the visual and aural stimulus produced by the work, whether it was from the Kramer Assault 220FR guitars, the Kidrobot 20" Dunny Superband "performing live" on a miniature stage, rocking out to live band and DJ Aba or trading Dunnys and other giveaways provided by Kidrobot and Juxtapoz magazine.

Art Assault is on the brink of a tour, reaching mulitple cities in the United States and potentially around the globe, with new artwork being added to each stop, and the proceeds of the custom painted toys and guitars going to benefit the Gibson Foundation. Every stop brings the opportunity to have art and music collide to rock minds and hearts.

We were planning to get some rest and not do customs for the rest of the year but life is truly full of surprises. We are now very busy doing customs for a certain project with a HK based gallery and a few more customs in line lol excited to finish the customs that are set to be released early next year :) God is good.

11/16/10 – From Dec...ember 3rd - December 5th, 2010, Gibson and Kramer Guitar, in partnership with their friends at Outta My Mind Creations and MaiHiroplan to unveil an exhibition set within the heart
of Miami’s Design District that fuses pop culture in creatively
unpredictable ways. Every year, contemporary art dealers, galleries, and
art & music aficionados gather at the artistic oasis known as Art
Basel Miami to behold the hottest in contemporary art. This year
attendees will be captivated by “Art Assault”, a charity art exhibit
featuring one-of-a-kind art guitars that will take place at the stylish
Gibson Guitar Showroom located at 180 NE 39th St. Suite #200 in Miami.
By merging music with visual art and designer embellishments, this
exhibition promises to rock the ears, eyes and minds of everyone present.

Event times - Thursday, December 2nd- Press Event/VIP Preview: 2-4 PMFriday, December 3rd- 10 AM - 6 PM Saturday, December 4th- 10 AM - 6 PM; Reception Party 7 PM - MidnightSunday, December 5th- 10 AM - 2 PM

The centerpiece of the event features Kramer Assault 211FR guitars as the
canvas upon which 11 celebrated artists will embellish with their own
artistic modifications. They have been encouraged to transform their
instrument in any way they wish, the result of which will be a
collection that is visually fresh. The line-up of artists includes art
superstars such as Michael Lau, Nakanari, Pete Fowler, Christian Jacobs
(Yo Gabba Gabba), 123Klan, Matt Waldman (Nooka), Camilla d’Errico,
Ashley Wood, Long Vo, Lebo, and Oscar-winning actor/artist Jeff Bridges.
This medley of artistic styles and influences brings together artists
to celebrate the variety of musical and visual artistry that exists today.

Since the show will take much of its essence from
the designer toy subculture, the show creators have also partnered with
Kidrobot to create a custom 20” Dunny exhibit unlike any other. Each one
of the five talented artists involved with designer toys (Jure Gavran,
Dave “Outtamymind” Quiles, Tracy Tubera, kaNO, and Rotobox Vinyl
Anatomica) will design a particular player of a fictional band, so that
when they are brought together, a new "Dunny Superband" will be
established on a stage! Kidrobot, along with the show creators and other
designer toy sponsors will also showcase innovative toys and sculptures
in an effort to share this contemporary subculture with the
art-conscious visitors. This exhibition of vinyl toys will feature
pieces and support from Kuso Vinyl, myplasticheart, SHON, Jure Gavran,
Fury Animals, 123Klan, MaiHiro, and Dragatomi. While
engaging and enlightening, “Art Assault” intends to serve a more
virtuous purpose. Once the event is completed, the Assault guitar
artwork and custom toys will be auctioned off via an online auction with
proceeds benefitting the Gibson Foundation. The Gibson Foundation
strives to reinforce our society's future by focusing on projects that
help children with education, music and arts, and overall well-being.
Gibson, Kramer and the show partners feel it is important to give back
to the community while providing entertainment and encouraging artistic
creativity. The reception party that will take place on
the evening of December 4th (7 PM-midnight) will be the place to be
during Art Basel Miami festivities, with a live band performance by
Fancy Me Yet and other acts, including Miami DJ Mr. Pauer. Other

ah, at looong last, after a month of nonstop apoxie clay, sanding and painting, the godaiqeen voltes v is finally finished. it will probably be the last suparobo custom we will gonna make for the year, since we are literrally RUSHING a custom dunny for the art basel show, courtesy of kidrobot and gibson guitars, and a sketchbot custom, all within 2 weeks!!! it will be a challenge for us hehe. we are also planning to make a jumbo machinder early next year, though we are still undecided who to make, anyways, we will start working on our custom 1 of 1 heltershelter series of 10 for a february 2011 release in hongkong, so watch out for it :)

"For the past years, my friends and I have participated in various outreach programs, medical missions and other tutorial sessions for street children. This time we decided to organize our own fund raising event and host a Halloween party on October 30, 2010 for the kids of Virlanie Foundation, Inc., our recipient organization.

Virlanie serves as a home for children in need of special protection. This non-government organization provides help to hundreds of children who are poor, abandoned, abused, exploited, neglected and orphaned. The group we are helping consists of 50 children, with ages 3-12 years old. Our little project aims to raise funds so we can give these kids learning materials, toys, basic toiletries and medicines.

Our original plan was actually a toy drive wherein we’ll gather enough toys to give to the children. But then I realized, why not give them more than toys? I talked to my friends and they were all excited to help. I got a few pledges from family and friends and I’d also like to ask for your help if you want to share your blessings with these children.

I’m hoping to raise at least $500 by October 20 from this fund raising effort through ToyPusher.com. You may donate either via PayPal or bank deposit. Kindly send me an email if you are interested to help and I’ll give you more details. I encourage you spread the word about this and ask your friends or other people you know to donate as well.

As a way of saying thank you, I’ll be giving away a Nendoroid Snow Miku and a figma Black Rock Shooter to two people with the highest amount solicited for this project. So go ahead and ask your friends to help you. This is definitely for a good cause. I guess you’ll always be reminded of your kindness and how you made a lot of children happy every time you look at that Snow Miku or BRS figma. ^^"
